Lucy

November 19, 2016 by

Lucy’s final day dawned with a beautiful spring snow softening the earth, greening all as it gently changed to light rain. By mid day, clearing made its way from the skies down to the ground, freshness evident in sights and smells. She was pleased by this, enjoying all the variety sent her way. Comforted in her bed, she rested peacefully most of the day.

When the two o’clock appointment arrived, Lucy greeted JoAnn with a wagging tail and a sniff of curiosity, then approval.  Kim, Liam, Richard, Mandy and Lucy all settled on the green couch, the one Lucy graced frequently with naps and cuddles.  She was ready.  Surrounded by family, love, tears and memories, Lucy assed peacefully, gently.

Lucy rests in the back yard she so loved, next to the garden she harvested cucumbers, tomatoes and all variety of munchies.  She was carried there by Liam, who 14 years before carried her at five weeks old into our lives. She lays at the confluence of the two garden beds, her head turned toward the back fence, ever vigilant in her watch for all who pass her way along the alley. She greeted all, saving her special welcome for Bob and Marney who always exchanged a kind word with Lucy on every journey, and smiling in memory of befriending a small Ethiopian/Belgian boy and his sister at that back fence. She is home.

The candle burning as Lucy was laid to rest was carried into the house, lighting the new way for all of us, searing the memory in our hearts all the joy that she brought to our lives.

She lived beautifully.  She died well.

Richard, Kim and Liam
